Devil in the Dust is a blog which focuses on monitoring and providing insights into news related to black lung disease. Black lung (also known as “coal workers’ pneumoconiosis”) is an irreversible lung disease caused by exposure to coal mine dust. Many of the posts on this blog will relate to black lung benefits law, but we will also post on topics related to medical research, mining regulation, and all things having to do with black lung.
The title, Devil in the Dust, is derived from “The Devil Is in the Dust” a song by Ed Pickford that is about a disabled miner who proves that his black lung was caused by his work underground. Raymond Crooke has made his cover of the song available on YouTube.
Devil in the Dust is published by Appalachian Citizens’ Law Center, a nonprofit law firm that fights for justice in the coalfields by representing coal miners and their families on issues of black lung and mine safety.

Dear friends,
Earlier this month I recorded my rendition of Alistair Hulett’s moving song “They fade away”. Searching the internet on black lung I came across your blog and the highly necessary attention you pay to this terrible disease.
